Should Pit Bulls be ILLEGAL???

“Justin’s Law” is named after a kid who died as a result of a Pit Bull attack. It’s currently being pushed in Texas with the goal of making ownership of a Pit Bull a 3RD DEGREE FELONY. Here’s some of the proposed consequensces of ownership:
(a) An individual adjudged guilty of a felony of the third degree shall be punished by imprisonment in the institutional division for any term of not more than 10 years or less than 2 years.
(b) In addition to imprisonment, an individual adjudged guilty of a felony of the third degree may be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Well all of the people on these posts are entitled to their opinion. But tell the people who have lost dogs or more so a child at the mouth of a Pitt and see what they would say about the loving Pitt Bull.
Where are the bad owners of shepards and of Bulldogs or any other large breed dog? ONLY Pitt owners are bad? Come on and face relality. The breed has a flaw as a domestic pet. It is NOT soley the owners. This is why family owners get themselves killed by their own Pitts. So are only Pitt Onwers bad?? Why not German Shpeard owners? Why don’t we have muliple reports of German Shepards killing people each and every year or Bulldogs killing people. Are you saying that owners of German Shepards are all good?

Your Pitts are loyal to your children, but for how long? When is a Pitt old and senile? I will never forget the little 4 year od boy in my ENT office missing a nose and ear from the family Pitt. How many children die by “loyal” family Pitts? “Sweet” dogs who “might” kill or not kill your child? How many families lost the chance to stop their child from dying at the hands of their “sweet” family Pitt? How many wish they could go back in time and rid themselves the the attitude you have of the “sweet” Pitts sleeping in bed with your little children. So you take the risk of your child becoming permantly disfigured or worse. Yes I agree that many Pitts are in the hands of idiots
In April 2011 a woman out for a walk was attacked and bitten to death when a few “family pet” Pitts escaped from back yard .Poor woman was trying to use her phone.Research it! How often do you hear of a German Shepard or other breed taking a human life? How many human lives does it take before the breed is deemed unstable. Sure they act affectionate to those who house and feed them, but even kill their own owners sometimes.How often do you hear of another large breed kill it’s own family member? If they can do this you better beleive they will kill strangers walking in front of your home. Reasearch the statisitics.No other large breed dog is found to kill over and over and over and over again. When will someone start as a memorial to all those killed while minding their own business and just taking a walk. How many people feel safe going for a walk in their neighborhood. A Pitt should be under the same laws as wolves and permits to own them given only to to families who can prove they can protect the public, similar to getting a permit to own a tiger cub.Look what happened to Sigfried and Roy. Pitts have proven themselves to be of this catagory.How appalled are we as the public to witness the ape mauling of the woman who lost her face? Yet Pitts kill and maim every year over and over again on a regular yearly basis. Where is all the horror over this? Are we all numb to this? It sure seems so as Pitts should have already been placed under regulations of ownership long long ago.
I think you need to do your research. Pitts are the only ones they make a big deal about. Tell me what was the first dog to ever recieve a medal of honor in war. Yes a pit bull. Its not the dogs fault that the owner do not raise them right. They do not provide everything they need to raise and train the dog properly. I have 2 pitt bulls and they are the most loyal and loving dogs i have ever had. I have had many dogs but will never find a dog as great as a pitt bull. Research your statistics again and look what the most agressive dogs are. Not pitt bulls.
Pitt bulls should be banned. They kill too many people, even there own owners and children within their own families. One can’t even walk down the street without fear of a Pittbull escaping from someone’s yard.
This is so true . I have had that experience two times in one weekend. One pitt killed my neighbors dog and attacked her. It tried to attack my dog but I got him out of the way. These dogs should be outlawed and taken out of society.
Most people do not know that pit bulls were the nanny dogs in England because of their temperament. Another fact is that pit bulls PASS and scored HIGHER in the temperament test the Golden Retrievers. Pit bulls are NOT born vicious. The PROBLEM is the gang members and other individuals who train them to fight and to be vicious therefore, when one of those dogs gets out and hurts someone, people automatically blame the dog. It is NOT the dog but the OWNER. Pit bulls are loyal, loving, affectionate, and strong and have a high tolerance for pain and a high desire to please consequently, it makes them vulnerable to the wrong people getting hold of them and making a profit off them. Out of the Michael Vick dogs that the ASPCA wanted to euthanize because they deemed them “vicious” 95% were able to be rehabilitated after the horrific abused they suffered. Some are now therapy dogs who visit children’s hospitals. Let’s face the FACTS about pit bulls and make the HUMANS responsible not the breed.

Pit Bull dogs are great it just how there owner tran them to be.
i own a pit i got him when he was 4 months old. he supposedly came from parents who were trained to fight and the people who had him before me was really mean and abusve to him. he is honestly one of the best dogs i have ever owned. i have had him 9 years and he has never bitten anyone. despite the fact that his life started on the wrong foot he truly loves everyone he sees and is perfectly safe around children. he sleeps in bed with my kids who are 5 and 7 and they can walk him on a leash. he is very gentle and as most pits are. i do not think they should ban the breed.

Mean dogs are made not born, Any attack of a pit is caused from some kind of abuse weather it be physical or mental meaning being caged up or tyed up they are just protecting what they think they should Iv never seen a mean pit unless it was tyed or abused. They are just like a person you take a abused child and when they are grown the reason for violance is because of the way they were taught to be.
As an owner of two Beautiful Pitbulls, a Red nose and a Blue nose…they are gentle, smart and loyal…and again it’s how you raise them. Our dogs are spoiled and loves and are wonderful with our Six year old son. “People” get educated on the Breed, I recently had to get rid of my weiner dog who bit 6 people. Pitbulls are not dangerious, people are.
So you abused your weiner dog? That’s why it was vicious? If it is in treatment both your dogs would be gentle based on how you treated them. They have personalities just like people that they are born with, just like some people are born sociopaths, often it is not the way they are raised but they way they are born. Maybe some pits are not born vicious, but there is a higher frequency of this disposition in pitbulls than there is in other breeds and their size/build/jaws make them capable of doing much more damage than other breeds. A pit bull has the same PSI in it’s bite as an alligator, and I wouldn’t want my child around an alligator no matter how well it was trained or how good it’s disposition was.
Look you know as well as I do the breed of dog doesn’t matter any dog can be trained to be mean the breed has nothing to do with it if your wanting to punish something for doing something it didn’t know was right or wrong then why not punish people that say they don’t know right or wrong to me if your wanting to punish something for what the dog did punish the ones training them to be that way punish the people feeding their dogs raw meat that makes them blood thirsty we have enough scientific studies that show this so do the right thing any dog can go through this if you took a educated guess of how many different types of dogs, cats and other animals that Animal Rescuers around the world found that were starved and when they did get food it was raw meat, or forced to fight other animals, abused; all different kinds of things you would be shocked so don’t blame the breed blame the owner for not loving or caring for the animal and damaging the animal and breaking the animals spirit don’t blame the breed blame the owner for not taking care of their animals and doing wrong to them!!
My boyfriend and I have two pitbulls of our own they are loving and loyal with everyone they wouldnt hurt a soul not even children. it is the way they are raised, unlike some people who post all over the enternet the dog fights they hold. which is stupid and wrong because it puts that breed a bad name. which the law looks at and goes and makes dumb ass laws about how pitbulls should be banned. look at cops dogs they look normal untill there trainned to be mean as hell. Every dog in this world could be trained to be mean including a chihuahua. So i think they should take there law and shove it up their asses.
I am Sorry for their loss but my pit saved my daughters life when she was 3months old Its all about how u raise them punish the deed not the breed at least that’s what I think. And if u think pits should be illegal then I think the police k-9s should be illegal and Rottweilers and chows

I happened to take the picture above of the pit bull. His name is Capone and he lives in Daly City, Ca. He’s a well bred dog with no issues at all. I’ve had pit bulls for 28 yrs. and and had over a dozen pit bulls and had no problem with any of them. If people would do there research they will find that there are many different types of breeds that bite and attack more than the pit bull. That is something the media never tells you. The pit bull is such a strong breed that when it does bite it does a lot of damage. A lot is caused by bad owners and breedings. People just got to learn about the breed and don’t discriminate.
I feel for Justin’s parents the pain has to be tremendous but this law isn’t would not be right all types of dogs can be dangerous. Let’s focus on the owners of these dogs. I have been bit three times in my life by dogs and none of them were pit bulls. I hope the parents find peace.
Any animal can be made dangerous! What about humans? Some of us can be the most dangerous creatures on the planet. That doesn’t make us all bad, does it? I own a 75 lb male that is a big o baby. He’s family to me. They will have to charge me with a felony if that law is past. I just spent 500 dollars at the vet on my pit, I wouldn’t spend that much on some humans. Maybe I don’t mean that.
i got a pitbull that I saved 2 years ago when she was 1. I got 2 sons that are her babies and she is my baby girl she love kids she sleep at my boys feet or mine.Her names is angel, she is our angel. I have a 4 1/2 female rescue and she is the sweetest thing on 4 legs. Sasha and her mom and dad get compliments from vets, her dermatologist and staff, groomers, random pedestrians and the like all the time. She is a beautiful well behaved, timid dog who loves to love and be loved.
Where in any of this gives the impressiont that we should outlaw pit bulls. We should not judge people on their appearance, why are we being asked to decide if we should judge a domestic breed of dog? I know of more people who are considered unstable than I do dogs. Dogs are a product of their environment.

I just adpoted a 41/2 year old named Sasha also. She spent a year and a month in a shelter. No one wanted her. I have to admit I was one of those who were against pit bulls, but, after visiting her 6 times, I put the breed aside and saw her as a dog. She is sweet and loving and everyone loves her!

My Pit Bull was rescued from someone that was classified “cruelty.” Not the dog, the owner. Beating and starving an animal should be what constitutes a 3rd degree law with fines. Animals are what they are bred to be. It is a tragedy when anyone is injured (or worse) by a dog, any dog.,There was a story here (in N.C.) about a pit bull that was lying in the grass as a toddler was playing with it’s ears, messing around on the dog’s face, and the dog did nothing. As a child, I was bitten by a cocker spaniel. I also had my ankles bitten by chihuahuas. What about cats? Cats scratches can produce fevers and other ailments. How far do we take this?
Pits are not born bad they are made that way I have one and she is the best dog and she’s great with kids

i cant count the number of times i have heard how bad pit bulls are and dangerous they are but i totally disagree. I own a pit bull and he does not have a mean bone in him. he actually got attacked by a little weenie dog and didnt do anything to the dog, my dog just kept going on about his business. so who is to blame there….hhmmm…. most definitley the LITTLE DOG! i just wish people would stop being so negative with there opinions and actually do some research and ask around.
I say Pit-Bulls should not be banned as a veterinarian I know what characteristics to look for in aggressive breed dogs and it is true on my experience that small animals are much more aggressive due to insecurity issues. Many Pit-Bulls that are used in dog fighting are breed to do that by selecting characteristics within mates. People who own Pit-Bulls or plan to own need to be careful and cautious because having a pure breed line can also cause temperment issues and again its not the dog or the owner’s fault it is at fault of just having poor breeding occur.
I husband is a dog trainer and has been bit by all kinds of dogs. My son brought home a pit bull 4 years ago as a puppy. HIS name is Blue and he is beautiful. We get many compliments on him and how well behaved he is. My husband has traine…d him as he would a labrador retriever. He is obiedence trained and I mean serious obiedence training with hand signals (you don’t even have to speak, just signal). He will retrieve in and out of water. He is one of the smartest dogs we have. We would never let our pit go-he is part of the family. He loves all people-kids and adults. He has never been aggressive against my poodles or my son’s GF’s Yorkies. He is always gentle.
This is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. It is not the breed it is the owner. I live in Houston and there were Rott weilers that killed a 9 week old. Would it make sense to own a Rott weiler a felony? Any dog is dangerous given how it is raised. The smaller breeds are actually more agressive than most larger breeds, including Pitt Bulls. I have three Pitt mixes and they LOVE kids, have NEVER attacked anyone, and are just amazing with children! These dogs are high energy and need to be trained with so that their energy is redirected. If people would bother to do the research on a breed they would know that back in the early 1900′s Pitt Bulls were actually babysitters for multiple kids. The bottom line is Pitt Bulls are not the problem, people are the problem.
That is ridiculous… not all pit bulls are killers. It is all in the way you treat the animal. I have a dog that has pit in her and she is the sweetest, happiest dog I have ever seen. The people who turn dogs in to killers should be doing time.

If any dog attacks an innocent human, the owner should be held responsible. Period.

I know a single Woman that has had pit bulls in her home for years. They are good, VERY intelligent and loyal dogs. Children rode them around the house like horses.
The problem is that the media DOES NOT show these good pit bulls. They don’t show the pit bull I saw running loose in the neighborhood with no owner. He went door to door for food, was timid and shy.
Nobody in the neighborhood was afraid or intimidated by the dog. I actually saw him run away from a toddler and a puppy. When he realized the toddler meant him no harm, he laid down and allow the child to pet him.
As Brandi said above, it is all about how the dog is raised. I must add that education and awareness is a must. The public is calling for a witch hunt on pit bulls because they don’t know any better.
Another friend’s dog accidentally bit a child’s lip. The child was holding the dog by the tail and trying to kiss the dog on the lips.
The City took the dog and locked it in the shelter for two weeks to undergo testing. The friend was allowed to visit her dog and was offered an opportunity to pay $275 to get the dog out of “jail.” Friends wrote letters to the court stating the dog had always been kind and gentle around children and strangers. She had to go to court twice and eventually purchased the freedom of her Cocker Spaniel.
As Mykal states, I remember the Doberman owner on my street growing up. We all feared walking on that side of the street; never knowing when he would come out to walk his dogs!
Movies in the 70s and 80s always had German Shepherds and Dobermans featured as guard dogs. Later, the Rotweiller was the most feared dog in creation. It took over as the featured warehouse guard dog in Hollywood.
We are too trendy and fearful when it comes to dogs. Next, they’ll be banning Tea Cup Yorkies because too many people trip over them and break their necks, causing paralysis.
This public paranoia must be stopped.
People who argue in favor of Pit Bull Bans most often do so because they say pit bulls are designed specifically to fight. It is sad that these days adopting a pit bull means being prepared and willing to accept the controversy that comes with being a “Pit Bull Owner”. Pit bulls are indeed descendants from the English Bulldogs that farmers used to fight bulls. The dogs grabbed the bulls by the nose in what later became the sport of “bull baiting.” After bull baiting was banned in 1853, pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs, often in pits, hence their modern name.
I read the above history and think, “Pit Bulls were the most abused, persecuted breed of dog. They are now born with a scarlet letter. Why don’t people want to do something positive to help these animals?” If pit bulls are banned they will still be in the hands of the criminal. Criminals will still fight pit bulls and breed pit bulls. The only people a pit bull ban will hurt will be the law-abiding good citizens who can provide loving homes for them. Please do not support the punishment of pit bulls for the wrongdoings of some of the unscrupulous people who own them.
Fun Facts that you do not read or hear about in the media’s portrayal of pit bulls:
■America’s first war dog was a Pit Bull named Stubby who earned several medals and the rank of sergeant for his service in W.W.I. He received a hero’s welcome and was even honored at the White House. He inspired the U.S. Military K-9 Corps. Pit Bulls were featured on recruiting and propoganda posters during this time period.
■Did you know that Helen Keller even had a Pit Bull as her canine companion? Pit Bulls are widely used as therapy dogs.
■Pit Bulls serve as narcotic and bomb sniffing dogs. One Pit Bull, Popsicle (named that because he was found in an old freezer) has the largest recorded single drug find in Texas history.
■Pete the Pup on the original Little Rascals was a Pit Bull
■Pit Bulls score an 83.4% passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society. That’s better than the popular Border Collie (a breed who scores 79.6%).

I have been attacked by a pit bull and I have no prejudice against the breed. I used to work at a vet clinic and I was bitten by more little dogs than pits. I think that people use fear in place of education to single out a specific breed, in the 80′ doberman pinchers were the most hated breed. It boils down to responsible pet ownership.
We own a pitbull and we rescued him from another person. We did not know his back ground and was very cautious when we allowed him into our home. NOW he is a wonderful dog and reminds me a lot of our old Chocolate Lab he just lays around and likes to be babied a lot. He is wonderful with our children but when we have guest come over he goes into our room and chills there. He is a VERY GOOD BOY!!!! This is crazy yes pits have gotten a bad rep from people owning them and fighting them that is what they have been trained to do. Now lets look at the Chow Breed or The Dalmation breed oh and what about Rotweillers? Are they being banned? NOOOOOO!!!! A Chow is naturally mean and when you purchase one you are warned about their aggressive behavior! Dalmations are not good with Children and is only partial one owner most of the time but are we trying to ban them? NOOOOOOO!!!!! It really is all about how you raise them and the situations that they are put in! Chiuaua’s are agressive little bastards I know that most likely will not cause death but they sure bite the hell outta you! This is one of the most stupidest laws that could be passed! You could go out a sexually molest a child and still not receive a harsher punishment as owning a pit bull! I understand that people have been hurt and killed by animals but also driving in a car but we are all still driving and putting 16 yr olds out on the raod texting and driving! SO what is the difference?
I totally disagree i own 4 pit bulls they are well mannered and are indoor pets. My grandson and my nephew love them they are so gentle with them and watch after my kids. i would not get rid of them. the r protective of me and my girls . If you decide to break in or harm one of us you deserve what you get. they are my kids too. I guess they gonna have to put me in jail, cause they r stayin.

A pitbull who is properly trained, restrained, and cared for would rarely attack a child, human, or animal. One can’t deny that the stature and strength of a pit bull does make them intimidating and strong – their bites are often deadly due to the physical anatomy of their jawbone.
But the pit bulls are NOT the criminals. They should NOT be illegal. What should happen, is the laws and CONSEQUENCES of the OWNER must be upped and enforced. The dog owner should be 100% responsible for their charge. If a pit bull YOU OWN kills a child – YOU’RE on the hook for not having a well trained, or at least well restrained, animal. Enact strong and severe penalties for dog fighting. Limit the number of pit bulls people are allowed to own.
Pitbulls, like ANY breed, can be great, loving, dedicated pets. There are thousand of pit bull owners that would have their best friends wrenched away from them because of the gross negligence of a few really bad dog owners.
Pit Bulls can’t lock their jaws, that’s a myth. Saying you need to restrain a pit is also incorrect. Otherwise I agree with your post 100%

I totally disagree with this law. Pit bulls are generally good dogs when breed by and owned by responsible people. The actions of irresponsible humans shouldn’t dictate the worth of a breed of animal. Many breeds of dog could just as easily hurt someone for no reason. And there a breeds known for turning on owners for no reason that there are no proposed laws banning them. Its a form of discrimination in its finest.
I disagree to the full degree. Pitbulls are neglected and mistreated by some owners and that is why you have attacks or news downing pitbulls. I have had pitbulls and I know plenty of people that have them. If this was to go into effect what would happen to the ones that are owned right now? If I could send a picture of my bosses dog right now, it looks almost like the one that first shows on this page. There will be some backlash on this if it happens and if I had a pitbull like my bosses that they paid good money for( champion blood line) I would take the felony.
