American Idol: Top 12 Perform

It was kind of a strange night on Idol.  The song choices were odd, but many of the contestants continued to show us they are there because they can REALLY sing!  The guys were definitely stronger than the girls again this week, but overall there were some very solid performances.

Let’s talk about who did great last night:

Pia Toscano: I bring up her performances every week, because she consistently wows me with her crazy ability to slay every song she sings.  Last night she sang Whitney Houston’s “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.”  The song itself was somewhat forgettable, but those power notes are not!

Jacob Lusk: I have not been a big fan of Jacobs up until last night.  I loved his version of Heart’s “How Do I Get You Alone.”  We know he can sing, but I think putting his insane vocals on a rock song lets us see another side of him.

Lauren Alaina: She made up for last week’s Shania Twain debacle by performing a country-fied version of Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m The Only One.”  This was a great song choice for her and she sang her heart out even though she’s sick with the flu. Nice job!

Now…who didn’t do so hot:

Haley Reinhart: While I REALLY like Haley, I’m afraid that she may be headed home this week.  She got the second to least votes last week and she really needed to do something epic this week to get out of the danger zone.  Unfortunately for her, she didn’t.  Her vocals and her lipstick were all over the place.

Thia Megia: I have been waiting and WAITING for someone to bring out a Disney song on Idol.  In fact, I would love to see a Disney-themed week.  Thia made my Disney dream came true…and it put me to sleep.  Her version of “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas was so boring.  Randy described it as a “pageant” performance. I 100% agree.  Could she be Miss America, sure.  Is she going to be the next Idol…it’s not looking good.

Now, for Casey Abrams.  I’m not sure whether he was good or bad.  I just know I LOVE watching his performances and I’m always interested to see what song he chooses.  Last night he chose to be the first contestant to ever sing a Nirvana track.  While I’m pretty sure I know how Kurt Cobain would feel about this performance, I’m still not sure what to think.  He is certainly a risk-taker.

My guesses for who is going home tonight?
I’m thinking it’s the end of the road for either Haley Reinhart or Karen Rodriguez.
