I could not help but let my mind wander a bit when I read this recent article. It is about Michael Lohan offering advice to Billy Ray Cyrus on their troubled daughters. You can read the full article here. Would this not be an amazing competition!? A bunch of dads trying to butt heads on how to save their daughters from continuing to be an epic fail! Whoever can keep their daughter out of negative tabloids or jail the longest wins the prize! This idea sounds absolutely ridiculous, but I cannot help but to think that someone has thought of it before. Of course we have seen this idea on lesser extents but just imagine the fathers of, Lohan, Spears, Cyrus, Hilton, etc. all together at once? I nominate Matin Sheen (father of Charlie) to be a guest host for certain episodes. I’m totally on to something here I feel it! E! hit Krash up!
So I decided it’s time to start a brand spankin’ new segment. I LOVE hypothetical questions and playing the dirty, “what if” game. Needless to say this is perfect for me! Every Saturday I will put females in odd situations to determine if the guy is a keeper or creeper. Some will be easy decisions and others may be difficult. I plan to not make it easy on you! On the debut today I talked about an extreme case. Hypothetically you have been on three dates with a guy, let him spend the night already, and everything is perfect! You are making out one night and notice a lock of your hair on his dresser. Is this act of weirdness a complete bombing of what you two had built? Can he be salvaged, can he be a keeper? Find out what my lovely listeners thought of this below!
As we go into the weekend, I have to say to all my listeners, Thank You!!! I don’t say it enough, but I am very thankful to everyone who listens to me.
A few days ago I was having a really bad day, and as I got in the elevator at my office a local business man got on the elevator with me. He said hello, and told me he listened all the time, and really enjoyed the show. I thanked him for the compliment, asked about his family and he gave me a quick update as we rode up to his floor, he went to his office and I rode up to the Candy studios to start my show a few minutes later. I didn’t even know this guy listened to my show and was surprised when he told me. In the few minutes between our conversation and me going on the air, my bad mood and attitude were gone, and I began the show with a smile on my face, and laughter in my voice.
In all honesty I had no reason to be in a funk, I’ve got the best job in the best place in the world. I love Bryan/College Station, Texas A&M and all the people that make up our great community. My coworkers are great, and my listeners are even better.
Some days it does feel like I’m just in a little studio talking to myself, but when I’m out and random people come up to me to ask me what the answer was to a Road Warrior Trivia question I asked a few weeks ago, I’m reminded that I’m not alone, I’ve got Aggieland listening to me. So if you’re driving, working, in the tanning bed, working out, cleaning house, picking up the kids, doing homework, listening online, or just jamming out to your favorite song, I want to say Thanks for listening to me and I’m going to do the best job I can, keeping you entertained and playing the Hottest Hit music.
Aggieland you’re the best, Thank You!
Here’s your answer for Trivia:
Congrats to Chris, he won free Caffe Capri. Tune In Monday at 4pm for more Road Warrior Trivia! If you ever miss the answer, I will post it here on my page of the NEW Candy95.com
Greetings all, some of you may know but if you don’t, I’m a HUGE Survivor fan. My following spans all the way back to the very first season of the show when I was in 6th grade in the year 2000. Since then Survivor has changed a lot, some for the good some for the bad. Regardless the show is amazing and a true test of mental will, determination, and strength. It’s a game where we have seen 20 year old whiz kids win, and 50 year old masterminds take the check as well. It is a simple game when it all boils down to it. How can you outwit, outlast, and outplay 15-19 other competitors to win a million bucks?
It’s Season 22 of Survivor and this season proves to be a pivotal change with the introduction of Redemption Island. Survivor Redemption Island is going to be one of the best seasons, mark my words right now. I absolutely love the new cast and the new variables brought to play. When somebody is voted out they are NOT out of the game, they are sent to an island where they will have a duel with the next person voted out. The objective is simple whoever wins the duel stay on at the island. Eventually it will be narrowed down to one castaway and they will re-enter the game. I do not expect this to sway the voting strategy much, but it’s a fun little twist to bring excitement back into the game.
The other HUGE twist this season is bringing back two of the most notorious players in Survivor history in Boston Rob and Russell Hantz. While a lot of the old time enthusiasts are not happy with this move, I am. The two are having a grudge match following their bitter showing on Heroes Vs. Villains in 2010. We saw on episode one how much they affect the game, even when dramatic moves are not made. Paranoia has set in on both tribes and paranoia is the quickest way to get yourself axed in a game of Survivor.
The premiere of the show this past Wednesday was absolutely amazing! If you have not watched it yet, STOP READING, this is my recap and analysis of the episode! Again the season starts off with 16 castaways just to have the two legends added on as a shock to everyone. I could not stop laughing as to how everyone cheered for Boston Rob but groaned when they got a glimpse of Russell. People can think what they will, but I’d love to play WITH Russell. Why you ask? He is loyal to his initial alliance, and one of the best at that. He lost his first season in Samoa in my opinion by overlooking his best options to win and staying loyal to his Southern sweetheart Nathalie. Regardless, many of the guys on his tribe are already targeting Russell for extinction. Fortunately for the Zapatera Tribe consisting of Russell, they won immunity and kept him safe from the vote. In this tribe look for Ralph a big bad country boy, to be a major impact in this game, I’m getting that vibe.
On the other side at the Ometepe tribe chaos has already ensued and how DUMB are these castaways this season? It makes for good television but also infuriates me as someone who desperately wants to get on this show. Middle aged castaway Kristina of the tribe finds the illustrious hidden immunity idol without a clue. That is a Russell move right there! However she is not discrete at all on her search, throwing up red flags against her with Rob peering in. Once she finds the thing what does she do? Target one of the strongest players in Survivor history for termination. NOT a bright idea lady. I will never understand why people on this game want to get rid of strong players right off the bat, it is just not a logical idea! Power players need fellow power players to survive. Once you get closer to the merge or after the merge generally physical players are targeted to be picked off anyhow, so what is the point? The people who often get knocked off in the first 12 days are so are the ones overplaying the game. Kristina found an idol, and could not keep it to herself as she told fellow castaways Phillip and Francesca that she had it. Phillip goes on an outrageous, “I’m a secret agent tangent,” at tribal and lets everyone know Kristina has it. Phillip then flips his vote and joins Rob’s young female alliance and votes with a split of votes between Kristina and Francesca, giving Francesca the boot. Essentially Kristina’s arrogance by thinking she had some sort of power eliminated an early alliance and put her name on the chopping block. JUST LAY LOW! people need to communicate and gain trust the first three days, even if it’s fake. This game will test how well you can work with someone you hate, much like the real working environment. A first impression takes 30 days to reverse, when the game is only 39 days… it means a lot. I agree with trying to find an idol, but to actively be trying to play it is unnecessary. Regardless Kristina will be a fun player through the next few episodes, and Robs young girl alliance of Natalie, Ashley, and Andrea will be fun. I have to feel like one of these girls is playing him with their young flirtatious methods. Russell is not one to fall for it, but Rob even though famously married I think could be. I can’t wait for more next week! Will Francesca survive another week at redemption? We will see!
Player Of The Week:
While all of us wait for the economy to improve, in the United Arab Emirates someone has built a GOLD PLATED BENTLEY. Details below:
“The car, which takes on a yellow gold hue when displayed under special lighting, is still “under wraps” as far as pertinent details go. These details include how much gold went into making this car, which represents the limits of ostentatious wealth representation of a region of the world – where the creation of the wealth is due to how much fossil fuels can be pumped or siphoned out of the ground – or seabed, as the case may be.
The car is said to be a Bentley model 66GTS sports racing coupe that is powered by a 626 horsepower supercharged engine and capable of accelerating the car from 0 to 62 mph in only 3.5 seconds. It can reach a top speed of 230 mph, which is not at all eco-friendly.”
So I’ve discovered a new TV show, West Wing, and I’ve been watching it on DVD. I never caught it when it was on the air, and I’m glad I didn’t, because I would’ve been waiting impatiently each week for the next episode. After watching a few episodes last night, and recalling an article I’d read in the Wall Street Journal about student loans, I had an idea. So I did a little research, and put together the following proposal.
Student Loan Relief for Teachers
With new regulations on credit cards and credit card debt, Americans can now contribute the largest portion of their debt to…(drum roll please) STUDENT LOANS. In fact, according to an article in the Wall Street journal from August 2010:
“Americans owe some $826.5 billion in revolving credit, according to June 2010 figures from the Federal Reserve. (Most of revolving credit is credit-card
debt.) Student loans outstanding today — both federal and private — total some $829.785 billion, according to Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org and
But unlike revolving debt tied up in credit cards, student loans can’t be wiped away with bankruptcy. Now look at who’s holding the debt, mostly students from middle class households that aren’t eligible for grants, but can’t afford to pay 100% of their tuition, books and living expenses without loans. Check out these stats from accepted.com :
Recent Student Loan/Student Debt Statistics-
Few students make it out of college debt-free. The following numbers show who is more likely to end up with more debt, and who is more likely to slide by with no student loan debts at all.
- 17% of college graduates from the class of 2008 borrowed at least $30,500 to pay for their degrees.
- 25% of ’08 graduates graduated with a debt of at least $24,600.
- 10% graduated with a minimum of $39,300 in debt.
- According to the “National Postsecondary Student Aid Study,” 2/3 of college graduates in 2008 graduated with some loan debt.
- Students from middle-class families are more likely to accumulate debt than lower-income students.
- Independent students are more likely to accumulate debt than dependent students. 24% of independent students graduate with a loan debt of at least $30,500.
- 38% of public four-year college students graduated without loan debt, while only 28% of students from private nonprofit colleges graduated student loan debt-free. Only 4% of students from commercial (for-profit) institutions graduated without student loan debts.
Those stats are from 2008 graduates, I couldn’t find the 2010 stats online, but I doubt those rates or totals have dropped significantly with our economy as stagnant as it has been. But the Data shows that the middle class is baring the brunt of the student loan debt. Now, quoting stats points out a problem. I propose a solution. I see a need for teachers in school districts around the country. Now these school districts have trouble paying teachers cause there isn’t enough money in the budget or the schools are in “high risk areas” and it is difficult to recruit teachers to work there. What if there was a bill enacted, that allowed these school districts to hire recent college graduates, pay them a lower salary than regular first year teachers, and in exchange erased up to $10,000 of student loan debt for each year spent teaching?
Say for instance a recently graduated mechanical engineer, cannot find a job in his field. So he works at coffee shop making just a dollar or two more than minimum wage, while living with his parents in Dallas to save money, until he finds a real job. It’s hard to save money or get ahead when he’s paying off $30,000 in student loans. Instead if he enrolled in this program, he would take a job teaching math or physics for Dallas ISD. His salary is $5,000 per year less than other 1st year educators, but he doesn’t have to make any student loan payments once hired by the ISD and enrolled in the program, and has $5,000-$10,000 of his student loan debt erased after his year of teaching. On top of that he’s such a good math teacher, the students at his school show an increase in TAKS scores in math, he receives an additional $2500 loan deletion bonus or other similar performance based incentives to get rid of his debt. After three to 6 years of teaching, his student loan debt is paid off, and he can make a debt free start in a career in engineering, or continue teaching.
That’s the bare bones simplified version. There of course would have to be provisions put in place, obviously there would have to be regulations barring the firing or laying off of tenured teachers to hire those paying off loans and earning lower salaries. Districts would only be allowed a certain percentage of enrollees teaching, unless demand for teachers was dire. Enrollees would be assigned schools based on geographic factors and teacher demand. Developing performance incentives for the teachers in the program would have to be addressed. Richer school districts, where there was no demand for teachers would not be permitted to hire enrollees to cut budgetary spending, and so on and so forth.
ALSO, an attachment to this proposal would include tax breaks for private corporations that adopted similar student loan repayment policies for their employees. There are currently tax breaks given to companies that provide tuition reimbursement programs to their employees, however many of these companies lose money, and productivity on these programs, as many employees don’t continue working for them after graduation. However, if these companies take on the student loan debt of a recent graduate they’ve hired, pay off that loan year by year based on service to their business, then the company would receive a tax credit equivalent to a 75-90% of the student loan debt paid off, as well as an incentive for employees to choose to work for and stay loyal to that company.
All in all; with a demand for qualified teachers, a staggering amount of student loan debt making it harder for recent grads to make ends meet, I think this rough idea could be expanded and implemented. I see this type of program benefiting recent college graduates, school districts in need as well as provide children with educators who are qualified, and motivated to teach them.
This is a rough idea of what I had in mind. What do you think about it? Is this a good idea? Would this be a program that would help improve education in this country? Click the Feed back button and let me know.
My new hero is a 10-year-old girl in Winnipeg. Her name is Maria Aragon and she’s posted a video of her own version of Lady Gaga’s new song, “Born This Way.” She is fantasitc, especially for a 10-year-old!
Gaga, herself, has even seen the video and she was moved! She Tweeted about it…
After just two days, the video is approaching one million views…make that one million and one….Enjoy!
