Summer Film Series: 'Remember the Titans'

Are you ready for some football? We finish out our summer film series and rev up our team spirit by watching Disney's "Remember the Titans." This dramatic tale about the racial integration of high schools in 1971's Alexandria, Virginia, depicts how desegregation played out on the football field. The entire town is divided as Coach Boone (Denzel Washington) beats out the Coach Yoast (Will Patton) for the top coaching role, and the players jockey to earn their chosen positions on the team. As the players struggle through their differences to come together for a victorious season, the whole town follows suit. "Remember the Titans" is 113 minutes long and is rated PG.

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs as we enjoy this free film under the stars by the Presidential Pond. Games and free refreshments will begin at 7 p.m., and the movie will start after sundown. Drinks are courtesy of Pepsi.

Library Issues Forum: 'Rigs to Reefs' with Dr. Quenton Dokken

There are nearly 4,000 active oil rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Besides the humans working on them, these structures are home to countless corals and animals, providing vital shelter for marine life in otherwise open waters. These artificial reefs virtually become their own ecosystems, but what happens when the platform is retired? An alternative to removal is to turn the rig into a more permanent reef through the Rigs-to-Reefs (RTR) program. Join us as we dive deeper into this topic, taking a look at this interesting byproduct of the oil industry from the viewpoint of one of the Gulf of Mexico's best-known conservation champions.

Dr. Quenton Dokken is the President and CEO of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation. The Foundation's mission is to promote and facilitate conservation of the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico and its resources through education, public awareness, research and leadership programs. Previously, he served as Associate Director of the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Center for Coastal Studies and the Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Gulf of Mexico Regional Marine Research Program.
