PSA for the Day: Don’t Buy an iPad from some dudes in the McDonalds Parking Lot!!!!

I really shouldn’t have to tell you not to buy electronics in the parking lot of a fast food chain!!! But if you’re considering it, or think it might be a good idea, read what happened to this woman in South Carolina trying to get a deal:

From MSNBC.com

Woman buys fake, wooden iPad for $180

— A woman at an area McDonald’s thought she was getting an iPad at a bargain price, but instead she got a very expensive piece of wood.

Ashley McDowell, 22, said she was getting food at about 10 p.m. Monday when two men approached her in the parking lot. The men showed McDowell a new iPad, and told her that they had bought several of them in bulk at a good price and had them in FedEx boxes in the trunk of their car.

The men offered to sell McDowell one of the iPads for $300. She told them that she only had $180, and they agreed to sell her one for that amount.

The men gave McDowell a FedEx box. Once at home, she opened it and found a piece of wood painted black with an Apple logo on it.

McDowell said the men were in a white Chevy Impala with no rims and untinted windows. She said one of the men had a gold tooth.

I wonder if she got a splinter trying to slide unlock it?

Aggie Driving 101: Driving in Aggieland

For those of us that have lived here for at least 3 years, BCS is an easy little community to get around in, but for you Fish, you sometimes make it more difficult than it should be.  You Freshman have had your license for at the most 2 years, and you’re statistically speaking the most accident prone drivers on the road.  To make matters worse, you’re all from different areas of Texas and the World.  So you’ve got kids from DFW and Houston who use the Highway 6 bypass to get anywhere they need to go and they like to run 85 miles an hour, Kids from Waco and San Antonio are like NASCAR drivers they just keep making left handed loops around town, then there are the international students who can’t read the road signs, they’ve never seen a traffic signal or know what turn signals are for, and finally you’ve got Bubba from Pig Knuckle, Arkansas, who’s hometown has 1 flashing red light, if he goes over 35 he can’t see where the cows have busted the barbed wire and got out, plus when there is more than one other car on the road he gets nervous in traffic.  Now You Know why there are at least double the number of  Auto Body repair shops in town than there are textbook stores in our little college community.

Here are some Basic Rules for getting around town.

Rule #1: PUT YOUR @!#$@#@#$@#$$#@ Cellphone Down…Don’t Text, Don’t Call, Don’t Tweet, Don’t FB Stalk the hot girl from class, Don’t play angry birds…NOT EVEN AT STOP LIGHTS.  This is BCS even if you drove from Highway 21 in Bryan, all the way down Texas Avenue to the Wings N More on Deacon inCollege Station, the drive would take you less than 15 minutes, your phone can wait. Just turn up Candy 95 and Drive!!!

Rule #2: If You Are ON or Turning ON to Texas Avenue (Business 6) DON’T TRY TO MAKE AN UNPROTECTED LEFT TURN, wait until you get to an intersection with a traffic light.  This is very important in College Station, you can TRY to turn into the Bed Bath And Beyond center if your northbound on Texas, but you’ll be waiting up to 15 minutes or causing a wreck pulling out in front of someone, when it would’ve been smarter to turn at Holleman, cut across to George Bush and be able to turn right into the lot and get your Panda Express.

Rule #3: Beware of Random Road Name Changes and streets with more than one name….FM 2818 is also known as Harvey Mitchell Parkway, Highway 6 is the East Bypass and the Earl Rudder Freeway, Texas Avenue is Business 6 (and don’t even try to figure out the block numbering system, it has never made sense)  University Drive is also Highway 60 and Raymond Stotzer Parkway (once you cross Wellborn Rd or 2818)  Harvey Road (not to be confused with Harvey Mitchell Parkway) is also Highway 30, and if you’re ever in Bryan Highway 21 is San Jacinto Lane.  As for streets that just randomly change names, Villa Maria branches off and into Briarcrest it’s the big one, but there are at least 5 or 6 more in BCS, you cross the Bypass on Southwest Parkway and it magically becomes Raintree Drive, where 2818 crosses the Bypass in CS it becomes Emerald Parkway for some reason…just be aware, though you didn’t turn you may have just changed roads.

Rule #4: If at all possible: DON’T DRIVE ON GAMEDAYS!!! You just thought the college students were bad drivers and constantly lost in this small little town, wait until their parents show up and clog the roads with their Escalades and Surburbans not knowing where they are, which way to turn or what the speed limit is.  Add in the OLD rich Ag’s in their Maroon Cadillac Sevilles that they’ve been driving to Games in since the car was new in 1962, sprinkle in some visiting fans, and Football GAMEDAYS become the PERFECT STORM OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS WAITING TO HAPPEN!!!

Other little things to remember: It should be common sense but in College Station and especially around Campus DON’T SPEED, In School Zones slow down and drop your cell phone, Watch out for Motorcycle and Moped drivers, you have your own protected lane turning onto University Dr from the Bypass DON’T @#$#$ING STOP THERE, Bicyclists will tell you all day they have as much right to the  roads as cars and they will try to flex that muscle but usually end up in the ER or as a hood ornament so watch for them holding up traffic, Don’t run red-lights, now that we’ve voted out red light cameras the FINE for running one is over $400,  and FINALLY NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE!!!

Adam Knight, Aggieland’s Unofficial Non-Academic Advisor

To the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2015, I say, “Welcome to Aggieland.”  Now I’m sure by now you’ve been to New Student Conferences, Fish Camp, and other such orientations that have inundated you with the Aggie Spirit, tried to teach you some yells, traditions and other parts of being an Aggie.  Well I’m here to teach you the stuff they don’t tell you about in Fish Camp, and give my listeners a head start to a successful and pain free experience in Aggieland.  This year I’m even putting it on the Website for easy reference.

Today, since you’ve already been kicked in the teeth by your first day at school, I’m only going to get you started with some much needed reference information.  Being a college student it’s real easy to get caught up in your own little world of getting to and from class, studying, projects and student organizations, that it’s real easy to lose track of the outside world.  Lucky for you Facebook, Twitter and other social media helps keep you connected to what’s happening in the world.  So you are much more savvy when it comes to global current events and news.  However, social media is becoming more and more invasive into our lives and your generation is flooded with so much data and information from Facebook, Twitter and other sources that you almost always have the info you need on your smart phone, you just need to know where to look for it when you need it.

For local news, WTAW is the local Newstalk radio station and their full time news staff is always on top of local events and happenings.  Road Closures, traffic, emergency alerts, they are all accessible on WTAW.com.  They are also our sister station so we can easily link vital info from their site to ours.   On Twitter, I also follow a local news anchor, Steve Fullhart, he’s in their news office throughout the day sorting through local stories and he is very good about tweeting short links so you can catch the whole story.(follow Steve on twitter @stevefullhart)  I also recommend that all Aggies  read the Battalion daily either online or grab a copy at the busstop, either way you’ll be up to date on everything happening on campus.  For sports info aggieathletics.com is your source for all Aggie sports, including schedules, rosters, and ticket information.  For more in depth Aggie info, local High school sports, as well as nationwide NCAA sports and Professional sports , check out  http://www.zone1150.com/ the sports radio station in town (and another sister station to Candy 95)

For any questions about Texas A&M, you need to have http://www.tamu.edu/ favorited on your laptop or desktop.  Texas A&M has put a lot of work into it’s website, but it’s still up to the Departments to keep their info current.  Texags.com is the site made for Aggies, by Aggies, and run by Aggies http://v4.texags.com/  Here you can get the latest news on Athletics, recruiting, and if you subscribe you can get even more, but even if you don’t subscribe, you have access to most of the forums.  Where Aggies, both current students and former students, discuss topics ranging from athletics, to politics, hunting and fishing, academics, religion, ticket exchange, professor comparisons,  and everything in between and beyond.  It’s a great site to kill some free time, and also a good source for all types of Aggie info. As for academics, you might want to use  http://www.myedu.com/ when selecting courses and professors.  The pick a prof section allows you to read reviews of the instructor and class, from other students, helping you save your Q-drops for when you really need them.  As for Textbooks, chegg.com and textbooksolutions.com are the 2 sites all the student workers recommend for the best prices on books and they’re a bit more reliable than craigslist.

As for your health, WEBMD.com is a good starting point, but I would recommend getting a local doctor while you’re still on your parent’s insurance, I am not saying there aren’t good physicians and nurses at Beutel, but every time I’ve heard from friends who’ve been, the diagnosis is always the same, “You might be pregnant!” regardless of gender.  Try http://www.st-joseph.org/  Scott and White and The Med for medical services in BCS.

Other sites you might need:

City of College Station- http://www.cstx.gov/

City of Bryan: http://www.bryantx.gov/

Movie showtimes: Cinemark

                            Premiere Cinema

And just for fun, here are some sites I check out for a laugh: (some content NSFW)

Damn You Autocorrect

What Would TylerDurden Do – (celebrity news and gossip with a twist)

And as always, please remember: THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS, ONLY STUPID PEOPLE THAT DON’T USE GOOGLE.COM BEFORE ASKING AN EASY QUESTION THAT COULD’VE BEEN GOOGLED.

Remember, it’s really easy to get caught up in your own little world and routine in college, use the web for more than just research and plagiarizing.  Just kidding, check back tomorrow for Aggieland Driving 101.
