I don’t have a lot of recollections from the early-mid 2000’s. That was many beers ago, plus, I don’t really have the best memory to begin with. However, in about late 2002, I do remember hearing a CD from this band called Like It Used To Be. Ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan of the Randy Rogers Band. Songs like “Tommy Jackson” and “Friends With Benefits” still get lots of requests on Texas country radio. Their next project Rollercoaster is still considered one of the best Texas/Red Dirt CD’s of the last 15 years. So many of those songs are still staples to the RRB live shows.
Speaking of live shows, that’s one of the things that sets the Randy Rogers Band apart from so many others. It’s a reason they’ve had the longevity that they’ve had. Randy isn’t as theatrical as a Kevin Fowler, but he gets the crowd to feel like a part of the performance. Having amazing players like Brady Black on the fiddle doesn’t hurt either. Fiddle players in the Texas/Red Dirt scene are rock stars in their own right. Most of the best touring bands have great fiddle players. Johnny Chops is another guy that has his own rock star moments. When he’s not slapping the bass for the RRB, he’s got his own project going. Geoffey Hill is a hell of a guitar player, but he might have missed his true calling (along with Brady) of being a professional washer player. That leaves us with the man who sits behind everyone else, Mr. Les Lawless. Sure, he may spend 90% of his night being blocked by the other guys, but his talent shines on his solos. He can also play a mean kazoo. The thing that sets them apart from most bands, is that they truly are a BAND.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Randy Rogers Band show that wasn’t just packed to the gills with fans singing along to every single song the sing. The impressive thing to me, is that even right after they come out with a new CD, the fans know every word within a matter of days.
Maybe you’re not as familiar with the band as others are, so I’ll help you out and give you some of my favorite tunes from the guys that you should check out.
“Kiss Me In The Dark” is the one that most casual fans will know.
If you’re looking for something a little more WILD AND CRAZY, check out “Fuzzy.”
Then there’s always “In My Arms Instead” to change it up for something a little slower.
These are just three songs with video, but there are so many other songs that will make you party, make you cry, touch your soul, and may help you get touched in other ways (if ya know what I mean!)
