When The Witches was released back in 1990, Anne Hathaway was seven. Pretty much the perfect age to be introduced to the terrifying film which was based on the children’s novel by Roald Dahl. Fast-forward to 2019 and the 32-year-old actress will be taking on the role of the Grand High Witch herself in the upcoming adaptation.
According to Variety, Hathaway was holding the offer for both that and Sesame Street, and at the time, scheduling for both films was holding up the deal-making process. With an arrangement now reportedly reached, Hathaway will follow in the footsteps of Anjelica Huston to star in the role.
Robert Zemeckis, who directed the Back To The Future franchise and Forrest Gump, will be directing the film and when he spoke to Allocine, he said: “We’re going to set it in the Gothic South in the 1960s and that’s an exciting way to put a sociological spin on this kind of traditional witch story. So it’s kind of an exciting idea.”
