Body Suits Might Be In Our Future

It might not be ready in time for the current pandemic, but with physical distancing likely to be part of our future, how cool would it be to have an anti-virus bodysuit? Still not convinced? What if I told you it came with hands-free beverage and vape consumption modules?

The suit “was born as a socially responsible solution to safely allow people to interact in close proximity.”

There’s no need to skip events during a pandemic, suggests Los Angeles-based Production Club, makers of the patent-pending Micrashell.

The suit “was born as a socially responsible solution to safely allow people to interact in close proximity,” explains the company website, and was designed “to satisfy the needs of nightlife, live events and entertainment industries.”

The suit has plenty of features, the company notes, characterizing Micrashell as “a virus-shielded, easy to control, fun to wear, disinfectable, fast to deploy personal protective equipment (PPE) that allows socializing without distancing.”

This “hazmat suit” with style has an air-tight top suit and a hybrid soft+hard helmet “made of tactical, high performance, cut-resistant fabric and developed for durability, endurance and easy disinfecting procedures.” Its two rechargeable lithium-ion cell battery systems further allow for uninterrupted active operation.

While it might not seem to be the most practical, designers built the suit with a specific timeline in mind. They didn’t want to “pack it with sci-fi features that don’t yet exist and will be roadblocks, but (let’s) use technologies that are available to us,” Miguel Risueño, head of invention at Production Club, told Fast Company.

With festivals, concerts, clubs, sporting events, theatres — really any mass gathering that used to be fun — being shut down, “we’re seeing our industry dying, and it’s screaming for help,” Risueño suggested.

Right now, the company is doing feasibility analysis and exploring prospective partners. Once done, suiting up — wherever and whenever that may be — could offer a safe and fun solution for the isolation blues.
