Car registration expired? The temporary extension for the COVID-19 pandemic is ending soon

Houston Chronicle – If your car’s registration sticker still says “20,” it’s about time to get that fixed.

The temporary waiver of vehicle registration requirements for Texas expires April 14, 2021, meaning you won’t be able to get away with expired registration after that.

All expired registrations must be renewed before April 14, 2021. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles put out a handy chart showing which of us are still able to renew online and which of us will need to make that dreaded trip to the tax office.

The penalty for an expired registration after April 14 in Harris County includes a ticket of up to $75.

If your registration expiration date fell before June 2020, you’ll need to renew it either by mail or in person. Otherwise, you can renew online once you get your car inspection done.

Gov. Greg Abbott granted the extension last March as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to spread across the U.S.

There may be long waits to renew in person. The fastest and cheapest way to renew your vehicle’s registration is online.
