Austrian, Czech and Swedish researchers have investigated the mystery behind Freddie Mercury’s angelic voice and discovered why it was one of the most unparalleled in music history.
Through examining archive recordings and filming the larynx of a singer imitating Mercury’s style with a high-speed cameras the researchers found a physical phenomenon called ‘subharmonics‘. This is an intentional voice box distortion using both vocal folds and ventricular folds to produce an extreme ‘growling’ sound which is traditionally used by Tuvan throat singers in Mongolia.
