This is that “Olympic spirit” people talk about: During the women’s 5,000 meter race, Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand went down and Abbey D’Agostino of the U.S. fell over her.
Abbey got up first but instead of taking off she held back to help Nikki get up so she could finish the race. But it turned out Abbey’s knee was screwed up pretty badly and she was going to have trouble finishing the remaining four laps as well.
So the two banded together and ended up finishing a half minute apart even though they’d been lapped by everyone else. Nikki was also there waiting to hug Abbey once she crossed the finish line.
